“El Laberinto del Fauno” - Pan’s Labyrinth

“El Laberinto del Fauno” is a spanish/mexican production written and directed by the mexican Guillermo del Toro. The story takes place somewhere in Spain, five years after the Civil War. The fight between the rebels and the army is the background of a fantasy story where Ofelia, a young girl very passionate about fairy tales, is the main character. The story keeps the same rhythm through all the movie and the multiple story lines are very well connected without excessive grasping to any story, character or fact. You hadn’t seen this movie before? How could you let such a piece escape from your eyes for so long. I just regret I didn’t see it in a proper theatre. It is a good movie, with some interesting design and creativity, and the ending just makes it even more perfect that makes you doubt if you should be happy or sad for the protagonist.
Since we are on the movie topic, I might suggest one for you to see that it is playing now: Cloverfield. Within the action genre, with a monster that attacks a major city, it is really well conceived. It’s worth the ride, but it’s one of those movies that it’s only good the first time and when you don’t know what to expect. Very modern approach of a kind of clichéd theme. Enjoy.
